Educational Programs

The Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

The Carolinas Center provides education for hospice professionals, volunteers, and board members through a variety of workshops, seminars, and conferences. Topics include clinical practice, interdisciplinary team practice, management, personal development, program development, and research.

A New Look for an Old Friend

The Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care's Annual Conference will be held October 3-6, 2010 at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC, and this year we are sporting a new "look"!

Mercy Hospice has graciously offered to host an opening reception at their facility on Sunday evening beginning at 6:30 pm. It is located close to the hotel, and if you sign up, you'll receive easy directions! There will be wine and cheese and best of all you'll have an opportunity to view the Transformation Art Exhibit! Special thanks for Mercy Hospice for offering to sponsor this reception/exhibit!

Sunday afternoon, we will begin with our pre-conference workshops, including the Medicare Update; Workplace and Personal Safety for Hospice; and Transformations/Employing Art as a Fundraiser. Three great workshops to choose from…

The Annual Conference will begin at 1:30 pm on Monday, October 4, and we are very pleased to announce that our keynote for the meeting is Judi Lund Person, Vice President, Compliance and Regulatory Leadership for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

This year will also feature workshops that are geared toward administrative and leadership as well as clinical staff. This is a banner year…

Call for Presentations

As part of The Center’s effort to provide quality educational programs to the health care community, we invite its members and professionals in the hospice and end of life care communities to submit presentation proposals for free-standing workshops and audio conferences. The Center is seeking proposals on innovative clinical approaches to hospice, end of life care, and interdisciplinary team communication.

Your presentation should focus on key issues facing clinical and non-clinical team members, including nurses, nurse practitioners, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, volunteer managers, therapists, medical directors, accounting, human resources, and topics on leadership and management.

This form can be used to submit proposals for:
  • One-day free standing workshops
  • One and one half day free standing workshops
  • Two full days free standing workshops
  • One hour audio conferences

Exhibitor Information for the 2010 Annual Conference

The 34th Annual Conference will be held October 3-6, 2010, at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC. The exhibit hall will be open for a Welcome Reception and Trade Show on Monday evening, October 4 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, and on Tuesday, October 5, from 7:00 am to 1:30 pm.

This is your opportunity to reach 500 hospice CEOs, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers and other professionals. Hospice and Palliative Nurse Certification Review


When: August 19-20, 2010

This is the deadline to apply to sit for the examination. You must submit you application to National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Do not send your application to The Carolinas Center!

This is a review course only. The Carolinas Center does not administer the testing and is not involved in certification. You may download applications and guidelines at www.nbchpn.org. Registering for this course does not mean you’ve applied to sit for the exam!

Course Description

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association offers a “Clinical Review for The Generalist Hospice and Palliative Nurse” as a means of preparing the practitioner for certification. Registered Nurses who participate in this 1.5 day review can expect a general presentation of the material via multi-media tools, handouts and lectures, as well as individual and group exercises to reinforce the information. The goal of this presentation is to promote and review the special knowledge of Hospice nursing care as well as disease progression. Regulatory aspects of the Medicare Benefit are also included. The material is presented congruently with the Study Guide for the Generalist Hospice and Palliative Nurse.

The review is most useful to the participants when personal study time is applied in combination with the use of the study guide and lecture information. However, as with any course of material, there is no guarantee of a passing grade in testing. This is dependent on the abilities of the participant.

Participants will be able to:
  • Describe methods of establishing care goals for hospice and palliative care settings
  • Define the components of treatment decisions
  • State the principles of effective pain management
  • Identify the components of a thorough pain assessment
  • Define common symptoms present at the end of life
  • Describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for common symptoms that can be included in the plan of care at the end of life
  • Discuss the management of dying, grief and bereavement in any care setting
  • Describe examples of self-determined needs in end of life care
Nursing Contact Hours:

The Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Centerfs Commission on Accreditation. Transform Your Interdisciplinary Group… An Intensive Training for IDG Team Leaders, Clinical Managers and Team Facilitators

Program Descriptions

Does your organizational culture reflect the value of interdisciplinary practice? How can a practice model optimize experiences for people we serve, our staff and volunteers? This interactive two day training workshop will reflect upon the experiences of those we serve and the value of hospice/palliative care interdisciplinary teams to support those experiences. Participants will complete a team and organizational assessment of an IDT model and discuss ways to create organizational systems and culture that values and supports all members of the IDT.     Pain Resource Nurse Training

    Nurses, join us for a full day of training as a Pain Resource Nurse (PRN). Our goal is to improve pain care and to train YOU to be a resource in your institution for other staff members regarding pain management. It will also help improve policy and remove barriers in your practice setting.

    Objectives:

    • Identify barriers and misconceptions related to pain management
    • Verbalize understanding of the differences between addiction, tolerance, dependence and pseudo addiction and opioid withdrawal syndrome
    • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate skills of pain assessment
    • Verbalize understanding of opioid induced side effects and measures to manage these side effects
    • Identify neuropathic pain and appropriate treatment modalities
    • Identify non-pharmacologic measures which may be used in pain management
    • Identify symptoms of “good” pain management
    • Identify ethical issues of pain management
    • Identify strategies to promote effective communication between medical team and the patient
    • Discuss the role of PCA and epidurals in pain management
    • Discuss the PRN role and verbalize understanding of that role

    Disclosure to Participants

    Successful Completion of this Continuing Nursing Education Activity:

    In order to receive full contact-hour credit for CNE activity, you must:
    • Be present no later than five (5) minutes after starting time
    • Remain until the scheduled ending time, and
    • Sign the attendance Roster, and complete and submit the Evaluation Form to the staff person overseeing the workshop at the conclusion of the program, at which time you will receive your certificate.
    Requirements for successful completion may also include participation in individual or group activities, such as discussion, exercises, practice questions, pre-/post-testing, etc.
