Two Great Workshops, One Great Speaker!
Laying the Foundation for Hospice Volunteer Programs and
Maximizing Volunteers: Developing “Gold Standard” Programs

When: February 11-12, 2010
Where: Charlotte Marriott Executive Park, Charlotte, NC

Speaker: Gary Gardia, LCSW, MEd, Hospice Consultant, St. George, Utah

Program Descriptions:

Laying the Foundation for Hospice Volunteer Programs: This workshop is designed to cover the fundamental components of a hospice volunteer program such as: standards review and updated CoPs, files and file content, policies and procedures, , interviewing and screening, position descriptions and developing effective volunteer training programs. While this workshop is essential for new volunteer managers and those looking to start new hospice programs, it will also be a good way for established programs to assess current processes and procedures.

Maximizing Volunteers: Developing “Gold Standard” Programs: For so many of us, we spend much our time making sure our programs are in “compliance” and meet patient/family and organizational basic needs. Yet there is so much more we can accomplish with the services of volunteers. Quality volunteer programs can help make your program move from average care to exceptional care. They can assist with such things as creating a significant and more effective presence in nursing homes and help assure that patients without caregivers remain home safely. In essence, creative and effective volunteer programs can help increase patient/family satisfaction as well as help our organizations save money. This workshop is designed to provide the skills and information needed to move beyond the 5% requirement and create “gold standard” volunteer programs.

    A Billing and Coding Workshop

    When: April 30, 2010
Where: Hilton Charlotte Executive Park, Charlotte, NC

Speakers: Jean Acevedo, LHRM, CPC, CHC, CENTC, and Christopher P. Acevedo, CHC, CPC - Acevedo Consulting Incorporated, DelRay Beach, FL

    Program Description

Navigating the Billing and Coding Conundrum: This interactive session will guide you through the billing process, including proper use of CPT codes and modifers to improve both the hospice bottom line and the satisfaction of your community attending pysicians.

Evaluation & Management: Using”Bullets” without Getting Hurt: This session will cover the basics in depth to help ensure third-party payers are not successful in retrospective recoupment and that your hospice program is able to optimize the revenue potential of physician services. Particular attention will be paid to coding for “consultations” now that Medicare won’t pay for this service.

Painting a Picture with ICD-9 and ICD-10: Even if your hospice claims only contain the patient’s terminal illness, palliative care claims have the potential for eight ICD-9 codes. By 2012, this will increase to 12. Clearly diagnosis coding is taking on increased importance. This session will cover several important elements for claims payment including the nuances of ICD coding in supporting medical necessity. We will go from 17,000 ICD-9 codes to approximately 155,000 ICD-10 diagnosis codes in 2013. It’s too early for a detailed ICD-10 coding course, however all programs need to know what should be done now to prepare. This information will be critical for physicians, medical records personnel and coding and billing staff for both hospice and palliative care programs.
